ARUGULA
Roquette
- Heirloom Arugula is one of those great, simple greens to grow at home.  Sow the seeds in a sunny location in succession plantings (approximately every 20 to 30 days) from early spring to fall. Arugula is now popular as a gourmet salad green.

BEANS
Caseknife (65 days) HEIRLOOM - OP;  This is one of the oldest varieties of green beans in the US (dated to 1820) and produces flat stringless 8 inch pods.

Kentucky Wonder Pole (60-65 days)(OLD HOMESTEAD)  HEIRLOOM - OP;  This old favorite was introduced in Kentucky in 1864 as Texas Pole, then re-introduced in 1877 with its present name.  One of the most popular varieties ever in the US.  Vigorous 5-7 foot vines with great taste.

Scarlet Runner (65 days)  HEIRLOOM - OP;  Can be traced to 1750.  Multi-purpose bean that can be used as snaps, sliced beans, shell beans, or as an ornamental.  Vines can reach 15 feet in length and are covered with scarlet blooms.  Seeds are large and are speckled purple, black and red.

BEETS
Crosby Egyptian (50-60 days) The "Old Reliable" of beets was introduced in 1869 by Boston resident Josiah Crosby. Large 3-4in. dark red beets and tall leaves. Stores well.

Detroit Dark Red (60-70 days)  First sold in 1892, this variety has deep red flesh that remains sweet after cooking.   Excellent keeper.

BROCOLLI
Calabrese - Heirloom from Italy arrived with immigrants in the 1800ft.s. Dozens of side shoots bearing 3-6 heads. Hardy until hard frost.

De Cicco - Italian heirloom producing one large central head, followed by several smaller shoots maturing at different times. Long harvest period.

BRUSSEL SPROUT
Long Island Improved (100-115 days) Heirloom variety taking its name from the place of origin. Vigorous, compact plants produce dozens of dark green sprouts 1-1/2in.

CABBAGE
Copenhagen Market (63-100 days)  Introduced in 1909.  Compact plants bear 3-4 pound heads that resist cracking.

Early Jersey Wakefield (60-75 days) 2-4 lb heads; Compact size and conical heads make this heirloom a great space-saving variety for smaller gardens. Introduced from the Isle of Jersey in the mid-1800ft.s, it was perfected by Peter Henderson, a truck gardener from New Jersey who bred its current properties. Matures in 70-80 days from seed and is resistant to yellows disease.

Amish (80-90 days) This Amish heirloom has 4-7 pound fruits with deep markings on the skin and thick deep orange flesh. Dependable growth in almost any condition.

Danvers Half Long (75 days)  Red -orange roots with blunted ends are uniform.  Excellent storage variety.

CAULIFLOWER
Early Snowball (64 days) Old heirloom variety produces early. 6 to 7 inch heads. Also does well as a fall crop.

Straight Eight (55-65 days) OP  The standard for slicing cucumbers since 1935. Bears a prolific crop of cucumbers with dark green skin and white flesh; stays crisp and resists disease.

EGGPLANT
Imperial Black Beauty (80-85 days) This heirloom variety was introduced in the early 1900s and has become the standard by which eggplants are judged. Deep purple fruits are 4-1/2in. when mature and have a flavor that lasts well after picking.

ENDIVE
Batavian Broadleaf Escarole (85 days)  Large broad twisted leaves radiate from tightly packed 12-16 inch heads.  Heirloom. Endive is a form of chicory whose roots are harvested in the summer and forced into growth during the winter to provide a fresh vegetable.

Golden Bantam (70-75 days) OP  Introduced in 1902, this variety is the standard of golden corn - sweet and resistant to lodging. 5-7 in. ears   Stalks to 8ft.

Giant Musselburgh (American Flag, Scotch Flag) 80-120 days -  Introduced in 1834, this Scottish heirloom has thick stalks and mild flavor.  9-15 inch stalks are mild and sturdy.  Overwinters well.

Connecticut Field (100-120 days) This is the traditional field pumpkin, grown for 200 years for jack-o-lanterns and animal fodder. 12-15' vines bear many 15-25 pound fruits with thick bright orange skin and deep yellow flesh.

Acorn, Table Queen (45-55 days) This heirloom variety bears dark green acorn shaped fruit on vigorous vines. Stores well.

Blue Hubbard Squash (95-105 days) a sub-variety of the original Green Hubbard Squash that was originally introduced to the vegetable gardening public in 1909. Blue Hubbard Squash is identical to Green Hubbard in every sense save that it possesses an attractive and very peculiar blue-grey color that is quite unlike many other popular winter squash varieties. Blue Hubbard Squash also tends to produce bigger fruits than Green Hubbard, with some reaching up to 50 pounds.
